Looking back

My mom made my clothes when I was young. We didn't have much money, so we really couldn't afford to buy clothes. So of course, that's what I wanted more than anything. "Store bought" clothes. Instead I had home-made clothes or hand me downs. And the school I went to, there was a definite division of "the haves" and "have-nots". Even in the first grade, there were cliques and people looked down on those that didn't have as much as them. I'm sure that has a lot to do with why I will not shop at yard sales or second hand stores. Arkieboy would ask me to take him to the Good Will store so he could look for a shirt, and I hated to do it. I hated it. A couple of women in my office shop at the Good Will store a lot, and they're always talking about some of the great deals that they get, but I just cannot stand the thought of buying used clothes. It was always such a mark of not being "good enough" when I was younger, that I just can't do it now. I won't even go to a used book store.

First grade:

Third grade:

Fourth grade - I finally got my "store-bought" dress.

I actually like the first two as much as the last dress!
I just blogged about another thrift store find, lol! I do understand though. My mom shopped thrift stores both when I was a kid and now. Maybe it was the way she acted about it (all excited) that rubbed off on me, and I don't mind it at all. My cousins feel the same way you do though, and can't stand it. I have lots of friends who won't go with me either. Too bad the kids at school can have such an effect on one another.

Dolly Parton wrote a song called "A Coat of many colors". You should read the lyrics sometime. It gives a different perspective to clothes made at home.
Michelle loves Goodwill. She goes there a lot. She mostly buys glass stuff but also buys jeans there. I don't like going in the stores because they smell icky to me. But she comes home with some cool stuff. Clothes included.
*smooch* Love the pictures.

Cute pics. Like MM, I also like the first two outfits as much as the store-bought one.

We were very poor. My mom didn't make clothes for us. All our clothes were from the church. Sometimes, my aunt would give us some hand-me-downs from my cousins, and whenever they saw us, they would make sure to point out that they used to own our clothes. So humiliating.

I hope I never have to step into a thrift shop. The only time I'll go near those places is to drop off donations.

I actually like the first 2 outfits MORE than the store bought dress. I don't think I ever would have noticed if kids were wearing handmade clothes.

I will not buy clothes from thrift stores. Heck, it grosses me out just trying clothes on in the store and thinking about who might have tried it on before me, so the thought of wearing clothes that used to belong to someone else really icks me out. Thank goodness I am lucky enough to be able to afford my own clothes.

*hugs*

I love your big beautiful eyes. I wore my sister's hand-me-downs. I was told that they were special so I bragged, "look at my new hand-me-down dress."

LOL...I think the first two look more fancy than the last one!

I went to a small country school. We only made fun of the people that smelled bad. *looks down with guilt*

See, ya'll aren't seeing the real attraction that outfit had for me. In addition to wanting clothes not home made, I also wanted a mini-dress soooooo bad. My mother insisted I was too young for one. This outfit was a two piece - a denim looking skirt, and a dress/tunic that hit mid-thigh. Momma wouldn't let me wear it without the skirt, but once I got to school, I would take the skirt off, and voila! a mini-dress!

My mom won't let me wear a two piece bathing suit - so I borrowed one.

Thrift stores do stink, but my Dbf visits often and I tag along.

My mom made some of our clothes too. And I had hand-me-downs from the church, which I handed down to my one sister. Then she wrecked them, so youngest sister got more new clothes than I did. LOL

My kids both wear hand-me-downs. There's nothing wrong with extending the life of perfectly wearable clothes.

I used to get some great stuff at a couple places in downtown when I was in high school. "Vintage clothing" they called it.

Oh you were so cute ARkie!

Funny how that shapes your life though. My father grew up in the depression and was so poor. When we cleaned out his work room after he died we found that he saved everything even though he was quite wealthy. He had saved used candles from the 50s and tin foil that he folded up and had a whole draw of.

We had a sewing machine, but I don't think I ever witnessed my mother using it. Thus, I inherited some scary-bad inability to sew.
