Mom

When I was visiting my parents while my brother and nephew were down two weeks ago, I noticed that my mom had a really nasty sore on the top of her foot. I asked her what had she done (dropped a piece of firewood on it), had she gone to the doctor (no), well then was she at least putting something on it, like TAO? (no, she had been putting vaseline on it, but then it started burning, so she stopped, but she was soaking it in something - I think she said epsom salts). So, then when I went down again that weekend (arkieboy was in a play), I didn't mention it. But yesterday when I drove down, I asked her about it, and she said it was starting to hurt. So, are you going to the doctor? (yes, Tuesday morning). This morning, while I was drinking my coffee, I was talking to Momma, and made a crack about how they were going to cut off her foot - actually, not the first time I brought this up as a possibility - and made a "buzzsaw" noise. Arkieboy and I came back to Tennessee today, and while we were walking around in a store, my dad called me. I asked how things went, and he said not good. Mom is in the hospital, and he said that might have to cut off her foot. So, he gave me the number and I called Mom. First thing she says, "you had to joke about it. Now see?" Then she told me that the wound doctor (do they really have a specialty for this?) said that they would have to cut out some of the dead tissue, but that it should heal without any problems. She's going to have to stay a couple of days. I asked if she needed me to come back down. She told me no, for me & arkieboy to enjoy our time together because we don't get that much. I feel torn. Do I be the dutiful daughter and go down to take care of my mom, or do I be the mom who promised this week to her son? I really think arkieboy would understand if we had to go back. But I know he would be really disappointed.

Good thoughts and vibes, please??

I think the doctors and your dad can take care of mom. It would be different if she was in a life threatening position. I vote for spending your time with Arkieboy.

Hugs to all.

Oh how scary for Mom!!! Hope all is well and it heals quickly and properly.

*hugs*

I'd wait and see what happens and spend the time with Arkieboy for now. Take it day by day for a bit.

Sorry, Arkie.

Yes, I have heard of 'wound doctor' specialists. Foot wounds in older people are especially problematic. I hope they can get her foot to start healing!

If she has someone to take care of her right now I'd be very tempted to take the special and planned timed with Arkieboy, but only you can know what is best for you to do.

I commented here. Where'd it go? *sigh*

I think you should stay with Arkieboy. If your mom is in the hospital, there's not much you can do for her now. Save your trip for when she gets out and might need your help getting around or with errands.

oh wow. *tons of good thoughts*

I think you should keep the plans you have with arkieboy. If she needs you tomorrow or the next day or whatever then go. Play it by ear.

I agree with Jen. You can't do much while she is in the hospital. Perhaps you can go down there for a few days after she is released.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Is your mom diabetic? I hope it isn't too serious and will heal quickly.

Thanks, everyone. *smooch* I talked with Mom again this morning, and they are letting her go home tomorrow.

Puffy, yes, she is diabetic.

Glad to hear Mom is doing better and they let her go home. Very scary, though.

I'm sorry Arkie. It will be ok whatever the outcome.

Funny story...My father had something like that when I was pregnant with Annabelle. He had a wound that would not heal. Eventually they said they were going to try a procedure or else he would lose his leg as well. The procedure was that they use the circumsised skin from newborns to cover the wound. We would joke(we did not know if I wa having a boy or girl) that if it was a boy he could have his foreskin.

Well it was funny at the time.
