Arkieboy wants us to go to San Diego next summer. Why? Because he wants to go to the SD zoo. I've told him I will try to work it out. I think Southwest flies there, and if I can catch the airfare on sale, that might run me around $400 roundtrip for the two of us. I've checked online, and admission to the zoo will be $32 each. They do have package deals that would also get us into Seaworld and the Wild Animal Park, and also covers (I think) the bus tour at the zoo and maybe the aerial tram.
Any recommendations as to what hotels to stay at, and more importantly, which ones to stay away from?

I've been to San Diego several times and there weren't too many really bad hotels so if you stay at a chain you've heard of before, more than likely you'll be fine. It's a beautiful city by the way. There is a haunted hotel on the other side of the bay, I can't remember the exact name but I'm sure it's probably listed on some of the travel sites.
Looks like you had a blast in San Francisco. I'm headed there again in January.
Visit the pandas!
I agree with CS...probably going to land a good hotel. If location isn't too much of a priority, I've had very good experience with Priceline booking. Can usually get a 3-star for the price of a 1 or 2-star.
I lived in SD for a couple years...never went to the zoo (they depress me), but you MUST spend a day at the WAP!! So awesome.
Why do zoos depress you, dingus? Just wondering...
What a travelling ho you have become.
If you want some good ribs, go to the Luvs restaurant in Oceanside. Yummmmmmmmy.
Pffft! Believe me, if I can talk him into going somewhere closer, I will.
There you go Arkie. A world traveler is unfolding!
I've heard San Diego is a wonderful city. I only drove through so I have no recommendations.
You'll need to rent a car or use public transportation or a daily tour bus so keep that in mind. Because of your previous experience in S.F., you might want to consisder a daily tour bus. Plus you'll get to see the beach again!
Anyplace near an ocean is worth going to.
Oh that sounds like so much fun! Can me and Nutzboy come? *grin*
Ark. Most of it seems fine, and I know there's been a change toward more natural habitats…but that first time I make eye contact with an animal that really "looks" caged, I'm depressed the rest of the time. I know there's a balance between knowledge and ignorance (they say we only protect what we love), but I get so much from reading, or watching nature shows, that it doesn't make much sense to me personally to cage animals the way a zoo does. YMMV.
That's also why I like the Wild Animal Park. For the most part, the setting is much more open and you just feel better about their conditions. (And yes, since I haven't been to the SD Zoo since I was 3…I realize it may not be that bad. Just explaining my existing aversion.)
